# Break a task into steps

Split a big task into a checklist, and schedule individual steps onto their own days.

Section: Tasks in depth

## Add steps

1. Open a task.
2. Type into **Add a step…** under **Steps** and press `Enter`.
3. Repeat for each step. Up to 100 per task.

> **Heads up:** Changes you make inside the editor, the title, notes, and the steps list, save when you **close** the editor. Ticking a step from a task card saves immediately.

## Tick steps off without opening the task

Task cards show a `2/5 ▸` chip when they have steps. Tap it to expand the checklist right there and tick items off.

When the last step is done, Kairo offers a shortcut: a toast reading **All steps done 🎉** with a **Finish the task** button. It never completes the task behind your back.

## Give a step its own day

This is what makes steps more than a checklist. Each step row has a **+ day** button, pick a day and that single step appears on [Today](https://kairo.jaimansoni.com/support/today) under **Steps today**, and inside that day in the Calendar.

So “File taxes” can stay one task while *Gather receipts* lands on Wednesday and *Fill the form* on Thursday.

> **Note:** Steps can be planned within the next seven days only (today through today + 6). For anything further out, make it a real task.

## Reading a step row

- A scheduled step shows its own row with the parent task's name after it (`↳ File taxes`). Tapping the text opens the parent.
- A step you didn't get to shows `from yesterday`.
- Steps don't count toward the day's capacity estimate, only whole tasks do.
